BioEnergetic Bodywork

What can I expect from a hands-on session?
In a typical session, a number of modalities are used to address physical, mental, emotional and/or spiritual energy blockages.  Working with these body therapy modalities in various combinations, a session is structured to the needs of the client.  A typical session takes from 1 to 1 1/2 hours.  You’ll lie fully clothed on a massage table while Carol Ann applies gentle pressure to acupuncture points or palpates the cranial sacral rhythms.  Normally a session moves through several phases.

As a state of relaxation ensues, you may become aware of issues within your body and/or consciousness.  As the session progresses, you may go into a deeper state of awareness, beneath surface tension, to access clarity or guidance about the issue at hand.

A variety of contacts and manipulations are used to stimulate and balance the body’s electromagnetic fields.  Carol Ann may help to process feelings and develop strategies for resolving issues causing tension.

Finally, integration and completion of the process occurs, your system is then able to complete its self-correction process. Balancing and grounding the body energy then closes the session. The result is a safe and supportive experience encouraging understanding and respect for the client’s healing process.  The client leaves with a fresh perspective on health conditions and a personal experience of renewed energy and vitality.

Somatic Experiencing
Trauma evokes a biological response that needs to remain fluid and adaptive, not stuck and maladaptive.  A maladaptive response is not necessarily a disease, but a dis-ease – a discomfort that can range from mild uneasiness to downright debilitation.  The potential for fluidity still exists using the gentle touch allowing the body to reestablish this flow.

This modality differs from other therapies which use catharsis as a way of “discharging” traumatic emotional material. Post-traumatic stress represents the abnormal prolongation of what has originally been a normal response to a severely threatening situation.  This process helps restore those responses that were unavailable while the person was in a state of overwhelm.  By renegotiating a traumatic episode, clients are helped to develop those resources that were lacking or insufficient at the time of the trauma.

Process Acupressure
Bodywork is centered on stimulating all the energy flows of the body rather than focusing on muscles or tissue. This therapy is related to uncovering and releasing the layers of personal history within the body—from the most recent experiences back to the very beginning of life.  Realization of the whole self occurs through the awakening of all parts.
Process Acupressure focuses and facilitates process through touch, breath, attention and heart love.  Allowing the person to flow with the Tao, awaken to all of himself, become fully alert in the moment, perceive the whole truth of it, and respond with maximum efficient action.

Polarity Therapy
In developing this modern form of holistic healing, Dr. Randolph Stone integrated his 60 years of knowledge of several ancient East Asian healing methods, including the Ayurvedic system of medicine, from India.

The principle of polarity incorporates the ancient belief that there exists a life energy force, which surrounds the human body.  This energy connects positive and negative charges at specific points.  Physical and emotional health can be affected by blockages or improper circulation of this energy.

Polarity therapy is the holistic healing method of unblocking and restoring balance to this energy flow.  The therapist’s hands act as a catalyst by touching or remaining just above the surface of the pertinent points of the body, allowing energy to flow through the points. In this way, the therapist’s own energy aids in redirecting the blocked energy and restoring healthy flow and balance.  The intended results are deep relaxation, improved physical health, feelings of warmth, love, joy, and peace for the client.

CranioSacral Therapy
A gentle, non-invasive manipulative technique. Seldom does the therapist apply pressure, which exceeds 5 grams, the equivalent weight of one nickel.  The positive effect of CranioSacral therapy relies upon the client’s natural self-corrective physiological activities.  The therapist’s light, hands-on approach assists the hydraulic forces inherent within the CarnioSacral system to improve the body’s internal environment.

The parts of the CranioSacral system which can easily be palpated are the bones of the skull, sacrum and coccyx because they attach to the membranes which enclose the cerebrospinal fluid.  This fluid has a constantly moving rhythm normally at a rate of 6 to 12 cycles per minute.  If the rhythmic movement is restricted, disrupted, abnormal or nonexistent, this indicates a problem in a particular area of the body.

A trained therapist can carefully work the tissue and muscle surrounding the affected area to unblock the flow.  Thus encouraging your own natural mechanism to improve the functioning of your brain and spinal cord, to dissipate the negative effects of stress, enhance your general health and resistance to disease.

Acupuncture
Unlike Western medical science, the Chinese have long viewed human health and its treatment based on the belief in body, mind and spirit as a whole.  Disharmony in any of the three parts affects the others.  Any mental or physical ailment is attributed to all parts, and therefore treatment includes attention to all.  This connection can be tracked back thousands of years.  The Chinese mapped out energy pathways (meridians) throughout the body around 3,000 years ago.  Similarly, the ancient Indians defined the energy centers (Chakras) of the body.

The ancient Chinese invented acupuncture, a treatment modality based on the cultural belief that a vital life force, called “QI” (chee), is circulated through channels (meridians) in the human body.  Disruption of this energy flow, due to physical trauma or emotional stress, results in pain and illness.  Acupuncture treats this condition using a very thin, hair-like needles inserted into various acupoints along the channels, returning the body to a state of balance and thereby restoring health.

Shiatsu (shee / AHT / soo)
Meaning “finger pressure” is the ancient Japanese method of applying manual pressure (instead of a very fine needle) to the same acupoints on the body as those used in acupuncture.  Based on the Oriental cultural belief that the human body is surrounded by an energy force called “ki” the Shiatsu principle is to relieve pain in one area of the body by touching another area that will balance the body’s energy flow.  According to the Shiatsu method of massage, to heal any one part of the body, all parts of the body, both mental and physical, must be treated.

Therapeutic Massage
This ancient healing science is actually rooted in Chinese, Indian, Greek and Roman culture.  Massage evolved from the natural human instinct to touch painful areas of the body in an attempt to soothe and heal.  Modern methods of massage have gained widespread social acceptance in several cultures as professional treatment modalities.

Therapeutic massage, a deeper form of traditional basic (Swedish) massage, penetrates to a level at which the same strokes with more pressure become physically therapeutic, and some healing can occur.  Although this type of massage provides relaxation and stress reduction, it is particularly beneficial for suffers of muscular ailments.

For personal privacy during a massage every consideration is given to respect the client’s privacy.  The body never needs to be totally exposed for an effective oil massage.
